Storytime: Does 3D Printing Surface Quality Really Matter?

In my latest video, I explore a topic that’s sparked a lot of debate within the 3D printing community: Does 3D printing quality really matter all the time?

While aesthetics can be important, functionality often trumps appearance—especially when it comes to real-world applications.

In the video, I talk about a 3D-printed part I found on a gas station coffee machine. After sharing a photo online, the community was quick to criticize the print's quality, pointing out imperfections like layer lines and surface finish. But here’s the catch: while the 3D printing experts were focused on the flaws, most people grabbing their morning coffee probably never noticed. For them, the part was simply doing its job.

The video dives deeper into the idea that sometimes, a print’s functionality is far more important than its looks. In industries like aerospace, automotive, and healthcare, performance and reliability matter much more than aesthetics.

So, should we always judge a print by its appearance? Watch the video to find out more and share your thoughts!

This image shows the 3D-printed part used on the gas station coffee machine. It may not look perfect, but it does its job—preventing customers from accidentally damaging the machine or ruining their coffee. This print is a prime example of how, sometimes, function is all that matters!
